PROJECT: King’s Wharf
LOCATION: Ferry Village, Renfrew Riverside
CLIENT and QUANTITY SURVEYOR: Miller Homes
ARCHITECT: Young and Gault Architects
STRUCTURAL ENGINEER: T.Lawrie
SERVICES ENGINEER: WSP
Young and Gault designed Ferry Village Marina as part of the wider Renfrew Riverside plan to construct 2,000 homes on a 105-acre brownfield site that stretches from Braehead to Renfrew. King’s Wharf is the latest building completed at Ferry Village Marina and it occupies a prominent location on the south bank of the river Clyde.
The building was designed to make the most of the riverside open aspects and the East – West orientation. Each flat has either a terrace or balcony or in most cases both. Big terraces are facing the waterside. Glazed walls are deliberately splayed to capture the most of the sun and maximise passive solar heating whilst also taking advantage of the river views.
The building form is an architectural response to the shipbuilding heritage on the site. The key feature is the eye shape corner that rises above the rest of the development and leans out towards the water like a ship deck.
Externally the building is predominantly smooth red, engineering brick, yet another reminiscence, which is complemented with silvery grey metal cladding and glass that pick up the light and reflect movement of the water surface.
On the rear side, facing the court yard, the elevation takes the playful turn. Most of the cars are housed in the semi-basement car park so the courtyard is a landscaped square with a children’s play area. This elevation has clean lines and simple massing, only interrupted with a series of random pattern colourful balconies.
The building was recently awarded with Best Apartment of the Year, Scottish Homes Award 2010.
