SALCOATS ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN COMPETITION
December 2007
In the Autumn of 2007 the RIAS organised a competition on behalf of the Irvine Bay Urban Regeneration Company for the design for flatted housing on a prominent site close to the seafront at Ardrossan main beach.
Young and Gault submitted a radical design, created by Haizal Roslan and Mark Adams.
Design Concept
The residential tower building is conceived both as an integral part of a Scottish coastal town urban fabric & a unique coastal landscape.
The design of this residential tower explores how the manmade and the natural can fuse together to create a unique design solution.
The proposal is 9-10 storeys high providing a new landmark for Saltcoats & Ardrossan. It acts as a counterpoint landmark to the high church spire at the far end of the sea front.
The building ‘grows’ out of it’s coastal landscape setting and steps up on its southern side maximising the potential for sea views over the top of the adjacent 3-storey seafront properties.
The stepping profile offers open spaces for roof gardens / terraces / planted green roofs.
The built form has been ‘eroded’ by the forces of the natural environment, with the stepping forms being ‘overtaken’ by soft landscaping.
